← Live page Surgeon General module — ten ways All tests

The brief

The live module is a full-width panel holding a tally of fifteen marks, the quote at display size, and the citation. It takes as much room as the two stats above it put together, for one borrowed sentence. Most of the options below are attempts to say the same thing in less space — a strip, a line, a stub, a margin note — with two that keep the panel but earn it.

Same copy and the same fifteen marks throughout, so the comparison is only about arrangement and weight.

As it ships

The current treatment, here for reference: panel, marks, quote at display size, citation beneath.

Chronic loneliness and social isolation have a mortality impact equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.

02

One line, marks inline

The most condensed of the ten. The sentence runs at reading size and the fifteen marks sit inside it, in place of the numeral — the tally becomes punctuation rather than an illustration. Costs one line of the page.

03

Marks left, sentence right

Two columns on one row: the tally holds the left, the sentence and its citation the right. No panel — the rule above and below is the whole frame. About a third of the shipped height.

04

Full-bleed strip

A thin band running edge to edge, marks and sentence on the same line, citation at the far right. Reads as a ticker between two sections rather than as a block inside one — the page's only full-bleed element, so it separates as well as states.

05

Number first

Sets it like the two stats above it: a large 15 with the sentence as its label. The module stops being a quotation and becomes a third figure, which is the cheapest way to make it belong to that row.

06

Compact card

Keeps the panel but takes it down to a card that sits in half the measure, with the sentence at reading size and the marks small above it. The panel earns its keep when it is not the width of the page.

07

Margin note

No panel and no display size: the sentence sets at body size in the measure, with the citation and the marks out in the margin beside it, the way a printed page annotates. The quietest option here, and the one that reads most like evidence.

08

Stub

A narrow bordered strip with the tally as its perforated edge — a torn-off ticket carrying one fact. The most object-like of the condensed options, and it sits happily beside the two stats rather than under them.

09

Third column

Shown in place: the module becomes a third item in the stats row instead of a block beneath it. The section loses a whole tier of height, and the three facts read as one set — which is what they are.

Between two rules

Nothing but the sentence, held between a hairline above and below at the full measure, with the marks tucked into the rule itself. No surface, no card, no display size — the module as a caesura in the section rather than an object in it.
